Gold Rush Gambling
The main version of gambling in the Gold Rush was “Next Card Gambling.” The dealer would flip down 2 cards. The player would guess the next card that the dealer would flip up; if he got it right, the gold he bet would double. If he guessed wrong, he lost the yeller.
Gambling was a big deal for the miners! Miners could lose all of their hard earned yeller in one-silly-little-bet. Goodbye gold! If a miner lost all of his gold, he had to work until he had enough gold to get home.
Miners would gamble when the gold ran out or when they got bored. We gambled and won 240 gold nuggets. We cut the deck by 1 card, and the first card up was a 3, the card we bet on! Most companies in Golden Gulch lost all of their yeller. We were very fortunate to win.
